Movie Shorts and Reading Strategies

Hello friends!

Monsters University, what a great movie.  But, the short, "Blue Umbrella" really affected me.  Not only did it make me feel sad for inanimate objects, but it also made me do some metacognition.  I realized I was predicting and inferring the entire time.  I realized this was a gem for introducing and practicing important reading strategies.  So I went on youtube and pinterest to look for some shorts to use.  Holy Cow!!  There are a ton of amazing shorts that are appropriate for kids.  There are also many that are not appropriate.  In doing this search, I decided to make a resource that could be useful to all of us.  That is what I am sharing with you today!

This first google doc link is to a list of animated shorts.  I have included the youtube links and what reading strategies with which I believe they work the best.  You may use them in any way you wish, but having watched them all, I placed them where I plan on using them in my classroom.

The second google doc link is to a list of graphic organizers to use with each short.  They are not specific to the short and can be used for any resource.  There is one graphic organizer for each reading strategy.  I plan to later make additional graphic organizers that are video specific, but I wanted you to have it to start your year.

  14. Hi Jaime! I just came acrossed this on Pinterest and shared it on my FB fan page. My fans are going WILD. Just wanted to know if you would mind if I made some primary response sheets (like yours, only for youngers)? I would totally link back to you so that people would know it wasn't my original idea! You can email me at krissyldavis@hotmail.com or fb message me to let me know. GREAT resource! Thanks a bunch!

  15. Hi Jaime! This is absolutely Genius!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this! I work with at-risk youth in underserved communities here in Miami, FL; my organization and I provide after school classes in music (violin, piano, cello, etc.) & performing arts. In addition, I put together an "Enrichment Hour" to help broaden their horizons, inspire, and further educate them. While I am very blessed to have students who are very artistically inclined, many of them are not proficient in the english language and have mediocre (at best) reading comprehension. I will most assuredly be using this for my next "Enrichment Hour"! If you have any other suggestions, let me know!!! My students and I would be so grateful!!! My email address is chiara@icypa.org. Thank you, Jaime! I hope you are well!

  16. Thank you so much for this collection! It's much appreciated. :)

  17. Animation is one of the ways that I use to teach my Jamie since she is more of the playful kind and nothing boring will hold her attention even for a minute. I have had some time going through different sites on the internet that might help me get ideas that interest her. That is when I discovered this great site that offers interesting information for use by parents as well as teachers. Now Jamie is way ahead in her reading and I have to go borrow more ideas from there.
